to clarify several things and a little bit more.

Brothers and sisters!!

Due to the fact that i have received several private complains (they weren´t really hard though...), I will try to explain couple of things: Bankia, which it is a conglomerate of several small banks, became famous because has millions of euros in debt. So i am not pleased either, that Silo Gambasse (the NGO) has the bank account there. However, i thinks it is just a inheritance of the past, of having an account in one of the little banks i mentioned above. Therefore, i propose other options: you can transfer it to my account of the coop bank (more ethic than bankia surely!); you can transfer it via Western Union (which is the most commonly used way to make money transfer in Africa i think; or i coul create a bank account in Guinea Bissau for the NGO and there receive the money. I know that any of them are ideal, but what can i do...

I forgot to tell the story of the Conacryan breadmaker: close to where i sleep in Gambasse, Abulay, a guy from Guinea COnacry, bakes bread everynight. He works really hard, actually, harder than the average men here. It is really handy to have the freshly baked bread just in your doorstep! Anyway, one day y went to buy some bread at 6pm and he told me that it was sold out. then i asked why he does not bake more bread (people still buys it at 10pm...), and he answered that he did not have money to buy the flour. So i offered him to lend him some money to produce more bread and to pay me back in 2 weeks or so. he agreed and now he produces 400 breadloads, instead of 300.
he came to me the day before my departure to senegal, and he wanted to give me 6000FCFA instead of the 5000 i lended to him. I became a bank and the meanfullness flooded my mind!! but within a second it was all gone. I returned him the 1000 and i understood how i want to promote or push the development here: not giving for nothing, promoting, helping, pushing up the development instead. That´ll be my policy from now on.

these days in Kolda, I´ve been sleeping chez Pisco (my french is going better!!). He hosted me without knowing me at all, just with the reference of a french guy from couchsurfing. Pisco paints, makes sculptures, designs furniture,... and he does it well! but to give food to his family, he works in a grocery shop, apart from making the people happier in his neighbourhood with his jokes and so! The other french lad, who came by boat-stop (boat hitchhike) from the Canary islands, Pisco and other 8 people, are trying to start up a self suficiency project here in Kolda (agricultural, energetic and financial self suficiency), and I am giving them a hand with some stuff, specially providing design modification of the eurobon pump for the extraction the water from the river instead of from the well. I am sure it will work.

couple of weeks ago, i confirmed a passed experience, which i thought in middle february that it was a perception ilussion, a mirage: when i was cyling towards Kolda, i saw just in front of me a 1m diamenter little tornado crossing the road. I was petrified. I didn´t know that this phenomens exists. So i stopped, i let it go. and i continued wondering if that was common at all. It seems it is around here.


the day before yesterday, speaking with the french lad, it seemed that we agreed in one thing: there is a lack of initiative and self-confidence here, maybe because the inheritance  of the esclavism, colonialism, etc, ... but it is unbelieveable the dependency they have towards the "white" in terms of entrepreneurship and other aspects. Probably the way the NGOs have been operating here it is also a good reason of that. I just seems part of the neocolonialism, making them believe that they are not able to charge and to enhance their live quality just by themselves and that they need external aid to achieve that aim. I may be exagerating a bit, we´ll see what do i think next month.

when i asked the nephews of pisco today why they did not go to school they told me that it was holiday for them. Easter. what!? in a country with 95% of muslims? something is wrong here.... it might be the time to break the chain that hooks them to france... i don´t know...

Several people asked me if i was an artist. It seems that around here, the people that have dreadlocks are either artists or gangs. And if they asked if i was a bandit and I answered yes, i wouldn´t be doing well in my carreer as a white-gang in Africa!

in my way to give up smoking, a slow way i have to say, i haven´t smoked a cigarrete in 2 weeks. however, i am smoking the tobacco leaves in a pipe. it is cheaper, more natural, and the money doesn´t go to philip morris... In the other hand, the youngsters call me old-man cause just the elderly people smokes in pipe. What can i do... I will try to give it up by using a wood stick as they use here as a toothbrush. Inshala!! but won´t be easy!!

the next one it´ll be from Guinea Bissau, the country of the drunken militars... or that was the scotland? ;-)) whatever....

para dejar zanjado el tema... y algo más

familia!! 

Debido a una serie de quejas y malas caras en privado, voy a intentar explicar un par de cosas: a mi tampoco me resulta atractivo que la cuenta de Silo Gambasse sea de Bankia, después de que la hayamos rescatados entre tod@s, bueno, entre los que pagamos impuestos... pero esto no me compete a mi explicarlo. Supongo que Silo, tendría una cuenta en una caja pequeña, que después entraría en el conglomerado fraudulento de Bankia. Pidamos pues a Silo que se hagan una cuenta en algún banco ético (si es que lo hay), o al menos en el menos malo (la pelota está en vuestro tejado Felix y Cia.!!

Por mi parte, puedo puedo ofrecer alternativas: podeis ingresar el dinero en mi cuenta  inglesa, del Coop bank (más ético que Bankia seguro!); Podeis mandarlo por western union (la gente recibe el dinero así habitualmente, así que pienso que será la forma más barata de que llegue aquí); o incluso, puedo hacerme una cuenta en un banco en Guinea (el banco de la africa occidental, por ejemplo) y lo podriais ingresar ahi; otra opción es que se lo mandeis a Roberto, un carpintero gallego que va a venir para Guinea en unas semanas. Ya se que no son unas opciones ideales, pero es lo que hay. Comentadmelo en privado y listo.

Y ya aprobecho a contaros alguna cosa más. Se me olvido comentar también la historia del panadero de Conacry: al lado de casa en Gambasse, de hecho a escasos 8 metros de la puerta, Abulay, un chico de Guiinea Conacry muy trabajador y su ayudante, hacen el pan a diario en el horno de leña. Son muy currantes, bastante más que la media. Una gozada tener el pan caliente y al lado de casa claro!! Un día, cuando fui a comprar pan por la tarde, el tio me comentó que se le habia acabado, y eran sólo las 7 de la tarde. Entonces pregunté:

- cuantas barras haces al día? 

- 300.

Y le pregunte por qué no hacia más.

- pues porque no tengo dinero para comprar mas harina.

- y si hicieras más, tu crees que lo venderías? - pregunté.

- si joder!! - respondió el cronakriés con acento vascongado...

-  De acuerdo pues: te dejo el dinero necesario (5000FCFA) para que compres la harina necesaria para hacer 400 barras y me lo devuelves en 2 semanas. estas de acuerdo?

- oso ondo! (respondió para mi sorpresa el incansable trabajador)

12 dias después, un día antes de partir hacia Senegal, Abulay vino, y después de los saludos pertinentes (que tal, como esta tu familia, como esta el cuerpo,....) me quería dar 6000FCFA. Yo insistí que no. Él que sí. Yo que no. Yo gané. Esta historia fue la que me hizo reflexionar sobre como hacer las cosas por aqui. Nada de dar: fomentar, impulsar, ayudar a desarrollar, si. Dar por dar, no. Esa será mi política a partir de ahora (hay ciertas excepciones, claro). 

(la parte del acento vascongado y las expresiones tan nuestras, es extricamente veridico, aunque estuvieramos hablando en francés ;-))

Estos dias en Kolda, estoy durmiendo en casa de Pisco (Yousouph Cissé abajo en la foto.). Es un tipo que me acogió con todo el amor del mundo y por la patilla, por medio de un francés de coushsurfing. El tio pinta, esculpe, diseña, y muy bien!! y para ganarse la vida, trabaja en un tiendecita donde vende un poco de todo, y regala un montón de risa y buen rollo. Ya veis, así es la vida. Ahi van unas cuantas fotos de lo que hace. Un artista el tío! Aparte, con el frances, un chico de 23 años que ha venido desde las Canarias en barco-stop (si, si, habéis entendido bien...), y con otras 7 personas, están intentando impulsar una asociación autosuficiente alimentaria, energética y financieramente. Árdua tarea la que les espera, aunque el proyecto es bonito, y por ello mi granito de arena estoy aportando durante mi estancia en Kolda, aparte del trabajo en la huerta, les he propuesto que acuerden con el mecánico de las bombas una modificación de la bomba para que saquen el agua del rio, que les queda a unos 60m aprox. Una modificación totalmente factible, y les ha parecido una gran idea, así que a ver si les va bien. Aqui teneis el link de su blog, en francés, claro.

El dia que venía hacia aquí, confirmé una experiencia anterior, que tomada por un error de percepción en un dia de febrero, lo olvidé comentar: delante de mí (thanks Mike & Caroline!), pasó una especie de tornado de 1 metro de diametro y muy alto. Apenas había viento alrededor, pero se veía que el remolino llevaba bastantes ramas y basura diversa dentro, por lo que fuerza tenía. Paré mi bicicleta, esperé que cruzara la carretera cuan manada de vacas, y continue mi camino, arrepintiendome de no tener la camara a mano (gracias Marcos, en cuanto vuelva te la mando o te la doy en persona!!). Espero encontrarme con otro y sacarle una fotito para que me creais. supongo que para un/una climatolog@ será un hecho conocido, pero para mí, fue un hecho sorprendente.

Hace una par de días comentado la jugada con el francés, parecia que coincidimos en una cosa, la falta de confianza y de iniciativa que tiene la gente aquí. No se si será debida a la herencia recibida, tantos años de esclavismo, colonialismo,... pero es increible, la dependencia que tienen para con los blancos en los aspectos empresariales, o de nueva creación. Igual la forma de trabajar de las ONGs haya influido en esto. Parte del neocolonialismo es hacerles pensar que no son capaces de cambiar las cosas por ellos mismos, y que necesitan ayuda exterior para hacerlo. igual exagero un poco, aunque es esa nuestra percepcion. ya veremos que opino dentro de un mes.

Hoy he preguntado a los nietos-sobrinos de Pisco porque no iban a la escuela, y me he enterado que tienen vacaciones por semana santa. En un pais de 95% de musulmanes.... no se. parece que ya es hora de que rompan las cadenas.... 

Y ya mas a titulo personal, un montón de gente me ha preguntado si soy artista! a mi! que casi soy mas torpe que Aketza en plástica! El asunto es que aquí solo llevan rastas los artistas o los mafiosos, o bandidos como les llaman aqui. Y me parece lógico que me pregunten si soy artista, porque si me preguntan si soy bandido y les digo que si, flaco favor le haría a mi carrera como delincuente! artista del ridículo! Que en eso sí que soy creativo, verdad Julito!

Ahh! y llevo sin fumar cigarrillos 2 semanas. En cambio, ahora fumo hoja de tabaco en pipa. Se generan memos residuos, es más barato, más natural y fomentas otro mercado, no el de las grandes marcas. Y fumo menos. La contrapartida es que los jovenes me llaman viejo, porque sólo los viejos la usan. ¿a quien le importa lo que yo haga... el proximo paso es el regaliz de palo cada vez que quiera fumar.... Inshala!!! aunque será dificil!!! ya te comentaré Carlos si lo consigo!!!

Starting up the projects (translation)

Here I start the first lines of the blog. I thought I would find it easier to use a blog as an easier platform of communication.
And to begin with, what better than a request!
 I am writing to ask you a favor: due to the fact that some people have offered their help (financial help I mean) I will propose several projects by using microcredits, and for the trust that my presence in situ means that everything donated is used fairly, (and not to get lost in the pocket of some mothxxxx.. ) I propose a method:


Through Silo Gambasse (www.silogb.com) have proposed two small projects:

·         Current status:

·         absence of pumps in many wells in Guinea Bissau.

·         large number of Afridev,  India Mark II, etc hand pumps (imported from China and India) that do not work, and that communities can not afford the cost of reparing. (This is an example, in my opinion, of the mismanagement of development cooperation: they placed a pump that when disrupted can not be repaired because the parts are expensive. Very smart indeed

·         Process:

·         Last week I made a pump in Kolda, Senegal, to learn the manufacturing process and to bring it to Bafatá to show it around and install it in a well to be confirmed yet. 100.000fcfa has been the cost of it. Silogb NGO has paid the cost of the pump.

·         training will be given to 1 or 2 mechanics / welders / fitters for the manufacture, installation and maintenance of these pumps. The training will take place in the region of Bafatá. A very proffesional and handyman guy who has made 44 pumps of this type will provide the training.

·         The money will be invested to purchase the required tools, materials for the manufacture of the first models, etc. The cost of materials for the manufacture and installation of the pumps is about 50,000 to 70.000FCFA in Senegal. I believe that in Guinea Bissau will 80.000FCFA, everything is imported here.

·         Creation of the cooperative, which will be financially self-sufficient once they´ve sold their 5^th pump.

·         We already have a client interested in purchasing 3 pumps.

·         For the coming months, and once the coop is up and running, the modification of the desing will be tried to match it fully with local materials, if this problem is faced for the first models.

·         All the money for the cooperative creation, should be returned to 0% interest within a maximum of one year to the NGO, which will be able to develop other projects of this type. If possible the same model in other regions.

2.      The purchase, by using a microcredit, of 2 ox and a plough. Mainly so they can plough the rice crops, as well as the peanut and other crops:

·         current status:

·         Most families plough by hand, because the price of ploughing by using animal traction is unaffordable for them.

·         To rent a tractor is unthinkable ....

·         Average price to plough each rice crop is 13000FCFA.

·         The rice production is higher if the land has been ploughed by animal traction rather than worked manually.

·         Precedent: buying a shared tool as a community has worked many cases if the project is well defined, see water pumps, agricultural machinery, etc.

·         Proposal: communally acquire two oxen and one plough.

·         Budget:

·         200,000 to 270.000FCFA for each 3-4 years-old ox, and 50,000 to 80.000FCFA the plough.

·         training expenses for one or two members of each family to know how to use oxen and plow properly: 25.000FCFA. Training provided by the owners of the oxen and an agronomist of the  NGO platform ECAS-D.

·         Transport expenses: about 30.000FCFA (to be determined).

·         veterinary expenses (to be determined but not much, around 20000FCFA/year).

·         Other expenses (you never know... and even less in a military driven country in Africa...)

·         Total approx: 700.000FCFA

·         Process:

·         Each family will pay 2000FCFA to purchase oxen and plow. Thus we encourage their commitment to the project (if they pay something out of their pocket, they will consider as their own.)

·         Each family will pay from 4500 to 6000FCFA for each day of use of oxen (maximum 2-3hrs). This money is paid into the bank in Bafata the same week.

·         There will be 5 people in charge to write down the number of uses, users, hours of work, the amount due to pay ... etc.

·         They are approx. 60 families with at least one rice crop each. This makes an amount of approx. 300.000FCFA only during rice-crop season (two months).

·         Afterwards,  the peanut crops, cassava, etc  also commonly grown in the region

·         Therefore maximum in a year and a half, the investment will be amortized and returned to the NGO to promote other projects.

·         oxen can work up to 7-8 years approx. Therefore, they have 2-3 years to raise enough to acquire another 2 oxen.

Aqui comienzo las primeras lineas del blog. He pensado que me resultaria más fácil usar un blog como linea vehicular de comunicación con vosotros.

Y para empezar, que mejor que una peticion!

 Os escribo para pediros un favor: debido a que ciertas personas me han ofrecido su ayuda, por la confianza que mi presencia in situ implica de que todo lo donado sea utilizado de forma justa, (y no quede en el bolsillo de algunos...) os propongo una forma:


Por medio de Silo Gambasse, (www.silogb.com) he propuesto dos pequeños proyectos:

1. La formación de una pequeña cooperativa para la fabricación de bombas de mecate o de soga:  http://www.wsp.org/sites/wsp.org/files/publications/Estudio_de_Bombas_Final.pdf

·         Situación actual:

o   ausencia de bombas en un sinfín de pozos en Guinea Bissau.

o   Existencia de un gran número de bombas manuales tipo Afridev o India Mark II (importadas de china e india) que no funcionan, y que las comunidades no se pueden permitir en reparar. (este es un ejemplo, en mi opinión, de la mala gestión de la cooperación al desarrollo: les colocan una bomba que cuando se estropea no pueden reparar por que las piezas son carísimas, muy inteligente.

·          Precedentes: Este tipo de bombas se fabrican en muchísimos países en vías de desarrollo, como ejemplo, Nicaragua ha fabricado 50.000unidades. (abajo el link)

·         Propuesta: Creación de una cooperativa que produzca estas bombas a un precio accesible para las comunidades y pequeños productores agrícolas.

·         Proceso:

o   La semana pasada he fabricado una bomba en Kolda, Senegal, para aprender el proceso de fabricación y llevármela a Bafatá para hacer la promoción. Silogb ha pagado los 100.000fcfa del coste de la bomba.

o   Se dará formación a 1 o 2 mecánicos/soldadores/montadores para la fabricación, instalación y mantenimiento de estas bombas. Se realizará en la región de Bafatá por mi parte y un chico que ha fabricado 44 bombas de este tipo.

o   El dinero se destinará a la adquisición de las herramientas necesarias, materiales para la fabricación de los primeros modelos, etc. El coste de los materiales de para la fabricación e instalación de las bombas es aproximadamente de 50.000 a 70.000FCFA en Senegal. Estimo que en Guinea Bissau serán 80.000FCFA.

o   Creación de la cooperativa, que sea autosuficiente financieramente en cuanto se efectúe la venta e instalación de la quinta bomba.

o   Ya disponemos de un cliente en Bafatá interesado en la adquisición de 3 bombas.

o   Todo el dinero destinado a la creación de la cooperativa, deberá ser devuelto al 0% de interés en un plazo máximo de un año a la ONG, lo cual permitirá poder desarrollar otro tipo de proyectos de este tipo. A ser posible el mismo modelo en otras regiones.

2. La compra por medio de un microcrédito de 2 bueyes y un arado. para que puedan arar principalmente los cultivos de arroz, pero también el cacahuete y otros cultivos: situación actual:

·         Situación actual:

o   La mayoría de las familias aran la tierra a mano, debido a que el precio del arado de sus cultivos es excesivo para ellos.

o   El alquiler de un tractor es impensable....

o   Arar cada cultivo de arroz de media cuesta 13000FCFA.

o   La producción de arroz es mayor si se labra la tierra con tracción animal que si se ejecuta de forma manual.

·      Precedentes: la compra de una herramienta de forma comunitaria ha funcionado unos muchos casos, véase bombas de agua, maquinaria agrícola, etc.

·      Propuesta: Se adquirirán de forma comunitaria 2 bueyes y 1 arado.

·      Presupuesto:

o   De 200.000 a 270.000FCFA cada buey de 3 a 4 años, y de 50.000 a 80.000FCFA el arado.

o   Gastos de formación a uno o dos miembros de cada familia para que sepan utilizar los bueyes y el arado de forma correcta: 25.000FCFA la formación impartida por los propietarios de los toros y un ingeniero agrónomo de la plataforma de ONGs ECAS-D.

o   Gastos de transporte: alrededor de 30.000FCFA (aun por determinar).

o   Gastos de veterinarios

o   Otros gastos.

o   Total aprox: 700.000FCFA

·      Proceso:

o   Cada familia abonará 2000FCFA para la adquisición de los bueyes y el arado. De esta manera fomentamos el compromiso para con el proyecto (si pagan algo de su bolsillo, lo considerarán como propio.)

o   Cada familia pagará de 4500 a 6000FCFA por cada día de uso de los bueyes (máximo 2-3horas). Este dinero se ingresará en el banco de Bafata.

o   Habrá 5 responsables que anotaran los usos de los bueyes, las horas de labor, el montante a pagar… etc.

o   Son aprox. 60 familias, con al menos un cultivo de arroz cada una. Eso hace un montante de aprox. 300.000FCFA solo con la temporada de arroz (2 meses).

o   Después la de cacahuete, también muy potente en la región. Mandioca, etc.…

o   Por tanto en un año  y medio, máximo, inversión amortizada.

o   Los bueyes pueden trabajar hasta los 7-8 años aprox. Por tanto, tienen 2-3 años para recaudar lo necesario para la adquisición de otros 2 bueyes.

Por ello, os pido que el que disponga de algo, confíe en mi persona, y este dispuesto a mandar algo de dinerito, lo haga a la siguiente cuenta:

Lo haremos como lo de los sms en la telebasura  (leedlo con voz de teletienda):  si quieres aportar para el proyecto de las bombas, pon ¨bombas¨ en el concepto de la transferencia bancaria, o si por el contrario deseas colaborar con el proyecto de los bueyes y arado pon ¨bueyes¨. Pon ambas si deseas colaborar con ambas a partes iguales.

La idea de ambos proyectos es que, por medio de microcrédito, se fomente su capacidad de producción, y por tanto el desarrollo sostenible y no dependiente de terceras partes.

ahi va una foto en la huerta con una de las mujeres (Nené) usando la bomba donada por las chicas de canarias. Por supuesto con insecticida ecologico fabricado por ellas mismas!!

Es posible que proponga algun proyectillo para la huerta con las mujeres, e incluso que propongamos un crowdfunding para instalar una bomba de soga en la huerta comunitaria si todo marcha bien!
